The real Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z06
Well-informed people have known it for a long time: You can’t get more sports car for less money than with the Corvette anywhere. However, the better informed have also understood that the Corvette does not need budget puppy protection at all, but speaks for itself through its distinctive qualities alone. For at least two generations now, it has been a sports car that can compete with the best of the best. Period!
659 hp and 881 Newton meters from a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 – these are hypercar dimensions. However, the suffix Z06 does not simply stand for maximum engine power, but has a completely different significance.
With the seventh Corvette generation, however, Chevrolet is once again pulling completely different strings when it comes to the Z06: On the one hand, the racing talents are being drastically refined, while on the other, the developers are seeking a previously unheard-of range. The Z06 is available as a coupe with a removable roof, but is also offered as a convertible (104,500 euros).
In addition to the standard seven-speed transmission, an eight-speed automatic developed in-house (2800 euros) is available, which can be considered an alternative for more comfort-conscious drivers, but can by no means be reduced to this role: In fact, the automatic version takes another two tenths of a second off the manual Corvette in the sprint from zero to 100 km/h with 3.2 seconds, but also does excellently in use on the racetrack with lightning-fast shifting processes, correctly portioned transmission leaps, and a perfectly seated shift pattern even in full automatic mode.
In fact, the automatic transmission is also suitable for uncompromising race track foxes thanks to its networking with the drive programs and the switchable limited-slip differential: Shifts are made from Eco to Track, and the differential can be switched from Rain/Snow to Dry and Sport as well as Sport/ESP Off.
In this form, the only role left for the seven-speed manual transmission is really as a feel-free alternative for fun-to-drive fanatics. And even though the Corvette engineers have even added an automatic intermediate throttle function to the manual gearbox, the faster lap times are likely to be reaped with the automatic transmission.
Those who are really serious about the hundredths of a second will hardly be able to get past the 16,600 euro Z07 Performance package. Here, the Z06 rolls to the starting line on Michelin Pilot SportCup 2 semi-slicks, the already sensationally gripping disc brakes are replaced by cake-slab-sized Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, and adjustable aerodynamic parts make the Corvette adaptable to a wide variety of track profiles in this respect as well.
The clear development goal was not just to increase pure performance, but to make the traction and stability of the power monster so pronouncedly high that even average drivers relatively quickly begin to hone their lap times with a very high sense of security. The 6.2-liter V8 pushes forward from every position, but brings this discharge of massive force to the ground in a noticeably balanced manner.
No restlessness when accelerating out, no inappropriate load changes in long sweeping bends, no breakaway when braking hard. The Corvette steers in wonderfully smoothly and impresses with nice steering feedback. The fact that the steering tends to be rather lightly tuned cannot possibly be considered a disadvantage, but must be seen as a pure character trait – which is even welcome for sovereign, relaxed after-work cruising.
Anyone who thinks that the combination of a U.S. V8 and hyperpower must lead to unseasonably high fuel consumption will be proven wrong by the modern direct-injection engine: In normal mode (Eco), four cylinders are switched off at less than six percent throttle position (i.e. when cruising along on the highway), and the V8 becomes a V4.
In addition, the supercharger is also switched off by a bypass in all driving modes when the engine is in shift mode – another saving feature that makes the Corvette Z06 one of the most efficient sports cars again in the end. A great feature for gamers: The optional Performance Data Recorder stores lap times and video images on a memory card – so the Z06 should soon be a YouTube star as well.
